Over the years, I have learned how valuable it is to conduct a pre-course survey to improve my students’ experiences and personalize their learning. This pre-course survey allows me to learn about my students’ interests, expectations, values, and their own definition of an inclusive class. It also allows me to learn about their reasons for choosing my class, goals, and also their plans post-graduation. By asking students what an inclusive class means to them (a participant-driven approach), we are reinforcing the understanding that inclusion is different for different people. Essentially how a student defines an inclusive class naturally translates into the value they attach to it in the classroom and in their life, and also translates into what they think the best approach is to achieve it.
